BIO

Rob photo.jpeg

I was born outside Istanbul in a small flea infested hovel along the Bosporus Strait. Over time I was able to organize these blood sucking creatures into a circus. My pet hamster Nigel and I often traveled to the surrounding villages performing amazing feats with these incredibly dangerous animals. Sadly, however, the lifespan of a flea is only a few weeks so when my family moved to Cairo it was all for the good. Once in Cairo I began my life as a pirate with my trusty Nigel by my side. We plied the waters of the Nile upon our fearsome dingy preying upon unsuspecting merchants. A cannonball ended this adventure and sent us into the Sahara Desert. We wandered for many days, weeks, even years. I do not know exactly because I didn't have a watch. It was in the Sahara that I came upon the mystic Abdullah Al Cadabra. He slowly shuffled up to me, looked deeply into my eyes and proclaimed, "Lunchtime!" So we ate lunch. After lunch we sat at a small table and he spread out the Tarot cards that would foretell my future. "I see pictures," he exclaimed. "And books! I see a Jersey. Not an old one but a New one!" And finally he whispered in my ear,"You will become almost famous!" So that's my story, believe it or not!

I have been writing and illustrating picture books for the past 30 years. My favorite authors are Chris Van Allsberg and Maurice Sendak. Their stories are both creative and original, something I believe I have been able to accomplish also, as opposed to telling the same stories over and over. Having read a number of picture books to my own children I also keep in mind the parent or guardian who is reading the book with their child and one of my hopes is that the text and illustrations are as engaging for the adult as they are for the child.
